Let's face it ..... most law firms - especially those in the SMB market - are struggling to keep up with the rapidly changing legal technology requirements. As an industry, legal technology is typically recognized as "being behind the 8-ball." However, the changes within the industry as a whole have forced firms to "sharpen their pencils" with their clients and to do more with less! As a result, their efforts with incorporating or improving upon their technology toolkits are often put on the back burner - until some client issue or regulatory concern forces technology changes.
Keeping Pace with Legal Technology Requirements
The most common technology lament shared by law firm management is "I just want to practice law!" That becomes difficult sometimes because the small to mid-sized firm may not even have an inhouse technology team to support their projects and ensure that they are on the right pathway with maintaining the proper technology landscape within their organization. A favorite phrase of mine is "You Really Don't Know What You Really Don't Know!" My first-hand experience with law firms really brings the validity of that phrase to the forefront. Firms are so busy keeping up with their daily routines and are often unaware of the technologies that could assist them with improving their law firm practices.
